Moses on Mount Nebo – Watercolor Illustration

Scripture: Deuteronomy 34:4-8

Happy August! Can you believe it’s here? 😲

As we start August 2022, my weekly bible illustration brings an end to the Pentateuch – the 5 books of Moses.

Moses stands at the top of Mount Nebo looking at the entire promised land that he will not enter. The regret toward his sin against God is expressed clearly in a frown. I used 3 reference photos and my color psychology book to mull over colors on this piece. In the end I went with my comfy tetrad, two sets of complementary colors. I stylized the main tree on the left and made blobs of murky-green to represent other trees. 😒  I was aiming for a calm and safe feeling. 😁 (Can you ignore the green blobs? 😂 )

The Inspiration: Moses reaches the age of 120 and has served his purpose for God. He’s in perfect health. God doesn’t allow him to enter the promised land though. I can’t imagine spending my life in the desert leading a bunch of “stiff necks” in circles (according to God’s will) and then not be allowed to enter the promised land. I imagine Moses had strong feelings about this but this isn’t the end for Moses.

With Elijah, Moses comes back during Jesus’ transfiguration in Mark 9. Unlike Elijah (a favorite character of mine), Moses actually dies. But, humans don’t bury him. God personally brings him to a burial spot in the valley. (Satan fights Archangel Michael over his body in the book of Jude.) This is what thrills me about the entire story of Moses. God! 😊 God talks directly to him, not through dreams, or signs, etc. He chooses Moses. God takes care of Moses. He protects Moses. He feeds Moses. He guides Moses. He loves Moses. I could go on and on. I love Moses. 😂 How else am I supposed to feel after journeying from Egypt to the promised land with him. You know that feeling you get when you don’t want a great book to end? That was me this week. 😭 Then I remembered I’d see him again in Mark. My life can go on!  😂 💞

Moses was planet earth’s first rock star! That’s why I gave him cool hair. 😎  He actually hits rock with his staff ...but that was his sin, disobedience toward God.  😳

Scripture says:

“Then the Lord said to him, “This is the land which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’ I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not go over there.”  So Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord.  And He buried him in the valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth-peor; but no man knows where his burial place is to this day.  Although Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died, his eyesight was not dim, nor his natural strength abated.  So the sons of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab for thirty days; then the days of weeping and mourning for Moses were ended.”

The baton is passed to Joshua now. He leads the people into the Promised Land. 💪✟💖🌟

(PS - Sorry for grammar errors in previous posts. I needed to add a lot of Biblical words to the dictionary in my word processor. Whowuddathunk - I need to "edit" my word processor's edit.  😜 )
